Exchanging an Arabic Driving Licence for a UK Licence
Drivers who hold driving licences issued in Arabic-speaking countries often need certified English translations to exchange their foreign licence for a UK driving licence or to drive legally in the UK. The DVLA process for exchanging a foreign licence depends on which country issued the licence and the type of agreement between that country and the UK.
Key facts about Arabic driving licence exchange:
- Designated countries β The UAE is currently the only Arabic-speaking country on the DVLA's "designated country" list, meaning UAE licence holders can exchange their licence directly for a UK licence without taking a driving test. A certified translation of the UAE licence into English is required as part of the application.
- Non-designated countries β Drivers from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Sudan, Yemen, and other Arab countries must take both the UK theory and practical driving tests. However, a certified translation of their existing licence is still needed to confirm their driving history and entitlements.
- International Driving Permits (IDPs) β Arabic-speaking visitors to the UK may use an IDP alongside their national licence for up to 12 months. If they become UK residents, they need to apply for a UK licence, which requires a certified translation of their Arabic licence.
- Vehicle categories β Arabic driving licences may include vehicle categories that differ from UK classifications. Our translators accurately translate licence categories and entitlements, helping the DVLA match them to equivalent UK categories.
We translate driving licences from all 22 Arabic-speaking countries into English, with certified translations that DVLA accepts. Our translators are familiar with the specific licence formats from each country β Saudi licences differ from Egyptian licences, which differ from Moroccan ones β ensuring accurate translation of all fields including personal details, licence categories, issue and expiry dates, and any endorsements or restrictions.
